How many of us remember reading good amount of history about the Vijayanagar empire.

avarxna This books raises some very good questions about all this. He writes in the south Indian language, Kannada, and has been the bestselling novelist for over 25 years now.

A thorough reasearch by SLB boko India’s brief period of history. This information should have been included in our history books. The content is gripping enough to make that happen.

There is a layered story telling, story within a story, of a war slave during the Mughal rule.

Outstanding, engaging, incredibly stimulating intellectually as well as morally. Book is an eye opener! Try to look at the issue objectively.


Honestly I had to skip few pages in the beginning coz the reality was too harsh to bear – but I caught up and now conclude that this is a great read with lot of facts for backup. But Bhyrappa’s books buck the trend and most of them have gone on to multiple editions. The book is primarilly centered to learn from history, but its unfortunate that the true history is veiled in Indian acadamics by imparting false avaranaa to the subject.

His books have found their way to the curriculum of undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses of the universities in the state of Karnataka, and have been the booj of about 20 PhD dissertations. And also I kept thinking why we were so easily defeated by outsiders. This novel makes you think why this information was denied to us all this time, unless a person decides to do a good round up of history books.

This parallel track seems to be a continuation in the voice of ” sArtha ” – Bhyrappa’s earlier historical novel. The literature is amazing – novel within a novel concept.

Book is amazing in providing references, to historical data used, at the end. In addition to his profound knowledge of Indian philosophical and cultural traditions, Professor Bhyrappa has since his childhood had intense personal experiences in both rural and urban milieu. We must accept the past in its complete ugliness. But, as a result of that review, this book has become famous in non-Kannada circles as well.

The book digs deep into the definition of history, its effect on the present day, the role of religion and makes the reader wonder if the left is really secular and liberal as they project themselves to be.
